FEBRUARY KEY POINTS
SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
- Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during February 2018 (752,700 movements) remained steady at 0.0% when compared with January 2018 (752,600 movements). This followed two months of no change in December 2017 and January 2018. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 4.8% higher than in February 2017.
- Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2018, short-term visitor arrivals (751,400 movements) decreased 1.2% compared with January 2018 (760,300 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 1.8% in December 2017 and an increase of 2.5% in January 2018.
- Original estimates: There were 914,500 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in February 2018.
SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA
- Trend estimates: Short-term resident returns during February 2018 (883,300 movements) decreased 0.1% compared with January 2018 (884,400 movements). This followed a month of no change in December 2017 and a decrease of 0.1% in January 2018. The current trend estimate for returns is 1.1% higher than in February 2017.
- Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2018, short-term resident returns (872,000 movements) decreased 2.3% compared with January 2018 (892,800 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 2.1% in December 2017 and a monthly increase of 2.3% in January 2018.
- Original estimates: There were 709,000 short-term resident returns to Australia in February 2018.

UPCOMING REVISIONS
Investigations by the ABS and the Department of Home Affairs identified quality issues with the capture and coding of state or territory of stay/residence from incoming passenger cards from July 2017 onwards. A resolution to these issues is in the process of being implemented. This will soon be completed and the revised OAD data from July 2017 to February 2018 will be released with the March issue of Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0) scheduled for release on 15 May.
